Hedvig Morvai, the executive director of the European Fund for the Balkans opened the expert debate "New dilemma: The EU Integration of Serbia-EU or EEA/EFTA?" organized by the NGO Organization Group for Development Policy (GRP) on Monday, April 1st, in the premises of the Media Center Belgrade.
The panellist of this debate moderated by Milos Eric (Programme Director of GRP) were Prof.Dr. Boris Begovic (Professor, Faculty of Law, University of Belgrade), Milan Pajevic (Director of the Office for European Integration of Republic of Serbia), Dr. Milica Delevic (President of the Committee for European Integration in the National Assembly of Republic of Serbia), Dr. Bosko Mijatovic (Center for Liberal-Democratic Studies ) and his H.E. Mr. Jean-Daniel Ruch (Swiss Ambassador to Serbia).
The main topic of this event, supported by the European Fund for the Balkans, was the Serbia's EU integration process on one side and the possible alternatives for the country on the other.
Since there have been voices on both sides of the border that Serbia’s accession to the European Union EU might be difficult, there also have been talks that instead of talking to the EU, Serbia should choose integration in the European Economic Area or the European Free Trade Zone (EEP / EZST).
If this option is feasible was the question posed to the group of experts in the field of the European integration and the economy, as well as the representatives from the EEA / EFTA.
The Expert Debate was envisaged to provide credible and verifiable evidence on the costs and the benefits of both the options, both for the political decision-makers and the academic and wider community. The audience had an opportunity to address direct questions to the panellists, whose clearly divided opinions on this topic were stated during the active discussion followed by the media representatives.
The organizer of this debate Group for Development Policy (GRP) is a non-governmental development organization whose mission is to contribute to the decision-making process in relation to Serbia's EU integration, based on evidence and verifiable facts.
